Word of Knowledge

In 2014, I was walking out of my office in Jacksonville, Florida with my friend Chris Brooks. We were walking through the lobby and just before we left the office building we saw one of our staff members talking with a young man. The young man seemed slightly distressed, but not too bad.

We stopped to say hello, and just as we were leaving I had a strong impression that I knew was from the Lord. I didn’t say this in a weird way or spooky format. I just simply said, “My friend, before I go; I want to encourage you with an impression that I just had. The Lord wants to encourage you to know that you don’t have to worry about your mother. He wants you to know that your mom is being taken care of and that she knows and God knows that you are a good and faithful son.”

The young man took an immediate step back in disbelief. The other staff member standing there dropped his jaw and said, “Dude, have you guys met before?” I said, “no, why?”. He said, “Bro that was from God. That was from God. Seriously, that was from God.”

The young man had just told my friend that his mother passed away a few days earlier and he was feeling a lot of guilt for not being there for her and not being able to do enough for her.

Friends, that is one of the ways the Holy Spirit works through what is known as a “Word of Knowledge”.

“Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,”
I Corinthians 12:1, 8

A Word of Knowledge is, “knowing something specific without having learned it by study, research or any natural means. It is revelation of a truth or fact.”

Jesus demonstrated this many times, but one time especially was in John 4:17 where he met the woman at the well. The spirit gave him knowledge that the woman had 5 husbands and was currently living with a man who wasn’t her husband. He had this knowledge without any previous engagement with her.

This is a “Word of Knowledge”. The purpose is revealing truth and understanding to people that can’t come through natural study.

The woman at the well left with an understanding of God that she couldn’t have gotten without the Word of Knowledge.

Chris and I were able to pray for this young believer and encourage him in his faith and strengthen him to deal with the loss of his mother. Perhaps the Lord deepened this man’s understanding of God in a deeper way through this event.

When Chris and I left the building, we got in the his truck and just thanked God for all the ways he encourages us all. We didn’t say “Dude that was flippin awesome!!!” or “Man, we got the anointing bro!”

We didn’t dance in the end zone. We handed the ball back to the Lord and thanked Him for all the ways He builds up the body with His gifts.

It’s amazing to see people’s lives changed through the gifts of the Spirit, and it’s really quite easy when you have a relationship with the Holy Spirit and a willing heart. Will you commit to listening for the voice of the Holy Spirit today? He just might give you a word of knowledge that will change the life of someone around you.

Holy Spirit, thank You that You know all about us and use us to impact the lives of others. I open my ears to Your voice today. Please speak to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
