Are You Charismatic?
“Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.” I Corinthians 12:1
When I was a kid, my grandpa asked me the question, “Jeffery, do you slumber when you sleep?” I didn’t know what slumber meant; I thought it meant slobber.
So I argued back and forth to the point of getting angry … “I don’t slumber when I sleep. I just sleep!”
Well, once I discovered the meaning of “slumber” – then I admitted, well, of course I slumber when I sleep.
Your understanding of words matters.
If I asked “Are you spiritual” or If I asked “Are you Charismatic” – you may or may not say “yes” to either – based on your understanding of the words. What we don’t want in life is for poor cultural meanings of words to keep us from understanding God’s intent for us and His Church.
When God uses words that have divine meaning – he doesn’t want us to be “uninformed” about what they mean. Being “uniformed” in life causes so many problems, insecurities, and unnecessary confusion.
Sometimes we are “uninformed” because we haven’t studied before. Other times it is because we have been wrongly taught. Regardless, The Holy Spirit does not want us to be “uninformed” about His Gifts for the Body of Christ.
This is why Paul said, “I do not want you to be “uninformed” about “Spiritual Gifts” or “Gifts of the Spirit.”
There are two really important words in the verse:
This word means “God Breathed, wind” or “spiritual”
This word means – “A Gift of Grace” “Undeserved Favor”
“Spiritual Gifts” = “God Breathed – Undeserved – Gifts of Grace”
Unfortunately the words “Spirit” and “charisma” have a cultural meaning of being “weird, naive, flaky, aloof, silly, ungrounded, and even flighty”. I believe the misunderstanding of these words has had an affect on how believers approach being “informed” and living according to the Spirit and His gifts
REMEMBER THIS … don’t be “uninformed”:
1. We are all spiritual beings – God breathed in us giving us life.
2. We’re all born again spiritually – meaning, God regenerated us and filled us all with His Spirit.
3. We’re all called to live according to the “Spirit” – meaning we are spirit-led beings.
We will spend this whole week studying the Gifts of the Spirit. Today, it is important to just open our hearts and lives to wipe the slate clean of any misunderstanding or teaching we may have had about the Spirit and His Gifts – and just ask Him, “Holy Spirit, teach me about your gifts. Teach me about how you want to work in my life.”
If we have this heart, I believe the Lord is going to really enable us to experience more and more of Him. He wants to give EACH of us His Gifts according to His will and the needs in the Body of Christ.
Holy Spirit, teach me and give me understanding of your gifts. I do not want to be “uninformed” regarding anything you desire for me. I believe you want to give me understanding and you desire for me to experience your power, love and control. Thank you for teaching me, in Jesus’ Name, amen.
