Echo Devotional: Day 17 – This is Evangelism

.

This is Evangelism

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.  (Mark 16:15, ESV)

EVANGELISM

J. Mack Stiles, in Evangelism:  How the Whole Church Speaks of Jesus, says, “Evangelism is teaching or sharing the gospel of Jesus with the aim to persuade.”  The goal is persuasion, but it is not a sales pitch. It’s telling people the truth, and inviting people to come experience that truth.  Evangelism is deeply loving and contagiously missional.

A personal hero of mine, Dr. David Shibley, once said, “Any church that does not have rescuing the lost at the core of its purposes for existence should forfeit its right to exist as a church.” This is a strong stance on how important evangelism is in the core of the Church. Dr Shibley also said, “In my opinion, no theological issue could be more crucial for evangelism and missions than how deeply we really believe that people without Christ are eternally lost, and that there is salvation in no one else and there is no other name given that can redeem them”. In other words, do we really have our minds wrapped around the fact that many of God’s children are desperately lost, and what it truly means for them to be separated from God forever?

When we came to the city of McKinney in January, 2015, we began immediately looking for people God had already prepared to welcome us and partner with us.  Our goal was to build a team of believers who had a heart to love the city and to see many rescued by the love of Jesus Christ. We have now spent almost three years building a team of believers who desire to see Jesus glorified and do our part in His redemptive plan to rescue people from sin and death.

KEY PRIORITIES OF EVANGELISM

1. DESIRE to see God’s kingdom advance

      • Matthew 28:19 – Go make disciples of all nations
      • Mark 16:15 – Preach the gospel to every person
      • Luke 24:47-48 – Repentance and forgiveness of sin is to be preached in His name to all nations
      • John 20:21 – Jesus is the one who sends us out on His behalf
      • Acts 1:8 – We are Jesus’ witnesses to the ends of the earth

2. CONVICTION in the power of the Gospel of Jesus

          • “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…” (Romans 1:16, NIV).

3. SCRIPTURE is the standard in evangelism, transcends culture, and works everywhere

          • “‘Is not my word like fire,’ declares the Lord, ‘and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29, NIV)
          • “For the work of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12, NIV)

4. JESUS’ NAME is the authority to rescue people

          • “By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.” (Acts 3:16, NIV)

5. JESUS’ BLOOD is the power to cleanse and forgive people

          • “They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…” (Revelation 12:11, NIV)

6. THE HOLY SPIRIT is always working in and through us in the mission

          • “So he said to me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.” (Zechariah 4:6)
