ECHO Devotional: Day 3 – The Echo of God

The Echo of God

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.  (I Corinthians 2:14, ESV).

Have you ever used an Amazon Echo?  Do you know Alexa?  An Amazon Echo is a speaking, smart device named Alexa that sits on a counter or table top. She is programmed to answer any question asked or command given.  All you have to do is say “Alexa” within hearing distance of the device, and she kicks into gear to obey your command or answer your question.  If you don’t FIRST say “Alexa”, then no matter what command you give in the room, she will not respond to you at all.

One Sunday morning I brought Alexa onto the platform at Anchor Church as I had planned to use her as an example of someone who can recite information ABOUT God but didn’t KNOW God personally.  I knew the illustration was going to be good because I had tested it previously. When I asked, “Alexa, do you know God?”,  she replied, “I’m sorry, I cannot answer that question.”  Her answer proved that though she had vast knowledge about people or things, she can’t truly know them in a relational way. This is what I expected from Alexa that morning, but what happened was even better.

When I said, “Alexa, do you know God?”, she responded, “I’m sorry, I need to be connected to the wifi network.  Please consult the Alexa manual for instructions on how to connect me to the network.”

It was perfect . . . she said two things that are powerful illustrations for each of us in regards to being the echo of God:

  1. I need to be connected to the wifi network
  2. Seek the Alexa manual for instructions on how to connect

Alexa needed wifi connection to access her vast expanse of knowledge so she could repeat it. You were created by God to live as an “echo”, repeating what you hear. It’s impossible to echo anything you haven’t first heard, thus you must be connected to know what to echo. What He says, you do.  Where He sends, you go.  How He loves, you love.  How He treats people, you treat people.  He’s the one who speaks and we were designed to be the echo. We, too, have a manual with instructions on how to connect!

YOUR SPIRIT

Problems are encountered when our God designed ability to “know Him” and “know His voice” is severed or broken.  That capacity we have to understand God’s character and direction lies within our spirits. Because of sin, we have all kinds of interference and disconnect between God’s voice and our spirits, making it difficult or impossible to know His commands or will for us.

We are not just brain and body.  We are so much more.

When our spirit is dead, we are merely human beings driven and led by self or our own broken reasoning, stubborn will and contorted emotions. It is impossible to know God without moving from a dead spirit to a living spirit.

In the beginning, there was God.  He always existed.  He was never created.  He is the only knowable source of life, power and purpose for all that exists.  In the beginning, the earth and everything created was thriving, beautiful and without conflict or strife.

Man walked in the earliest days in relationship with God and without pain, sickness, disease, sin, or death.  Everything was good and whole. God commanded Adam and Eve to not eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.  He freed them to eat of every other tree in the entire garden, but not this tree.  He told them if they ate of the forbidden tree, they would certainly die.  They would fall.

And the lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.  (Genesis 2:16-17, HCSB)

The Bible tells us there was a serpent in the garden who somehow communicated with the first woman God created, Eve, and the serpent was Satan or the devil.  Satan is the master deceiver of the whole world who speaks lies into the heart of man, tempting every man according to their sinful nature and desires.

And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world … (Revelation 12:9, ESV)

Since that very moment, the eyes and heart of all humans who have ever lived have had a natural bend to wander away from God’s original design for life. But God had a plan from the foundation of the world for how he would win back the hearts of mankind.  He would do it through Jesus.

…even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ . . . (Ephesians 1:4-5, ESV)

Since we sinned and brought interference between us and God, our spirits were dead. We needed love to break through and awaken our hearts to our Creator again.  So right in the middle of our broken ways and broken patterns of thinking, our choosing God and accepting His love opens our hearts to come back to life.  This is grace.  His grace breaks through and brings us back to Him.  This is the ultimate expression of love.

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  (Romans 5:8, ESV)

When we believe in Jesus, He moves us immediately from death to life.  He does it by replacing our dead spirit with His LIVING spirit. As a result, we have the ability to live being led by the Spirit of God in us.  We no longer have to be slaves to fallen thinking, fallen emotions and a fallen will.

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. (I Corinthians 2:14, ESV).

When we have a living spirit, we have the ability to hear God’s voice, and know Him according to His word.  When he speaks and we obey, we are His echo.  We are in alignment with Him.  We’re not just living our own way, but rather we are an echo of His voice repeating His will on earth as it is in heaven.

PRAYER

Father, even when I still feel lost, I know better.  I know that my spirit is alive in you and that you have saved me.  I thank you for breaking through and choosing me even in the middle of my sin.  You saved me because of your love working in my heart, not because I was good enough.  I was dead and you made me alive.  Today, I cry out to you for help in walking out my relationship with you.  I can’t do it on my own, and I need your help all of the time.  Please, Lord, draw me closer and keep me secure in your love.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen
