FIRST LOVE – DAILY DEVOTIONAL – DAY 27

“The Gift” – by Paul Morrison – Pastor, Anchor Students

“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
JOHN 14:25–26

Hannah and I got married in February two years ago. TWO YEARS. I can’t believe it’s already been this long, it seems like it’s been so much longer yet so recent at the same time. This is one of my favorite times of the year though, I by nature love giving gifts, but I especially love surprise gifts and plans for Hannah. There’s just something special about planning and preparing something to show Hannah how I feel about her. Sometimes I get so amped, that I keep asking her “what do you think I got you?” or eventually spilling the beans before it’s even time to give her the gift.

When I read this scripture it feels similar to me. It’s amazing to me how excited Jesus was about the Holy Spirit coming. Long before time began God knew all the plans he had for his people and the great gift of the Spirit to come. If you read the Old Testament, it’s not long before you see God is excited to give his people the gift of the Spirit.

Jesus could not wait to give his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus says in John 16:7, “I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

Jesus was ecstatic to give his people the gift of the Holy Spirit.

How much of us enjoy the words of Jesus but neglect the presence of the Spirit? The Holy Spirit is meant to be an illuminator, a friend, a guide. If we want to live and love like Jesus we must be filled with the Spirit, we must cultivate a relationship with the one who knows the way of Jesus like no other.

Jesus never promised something and didn’t deliver. I pray that we see the Spirit in the same way Jesus did.

PRAYER
Father, thank You for the gift of the Spirit. You always fill me with Your Spirit when I ask you. Thank you for encouraging me and reminding me of Your Word. Thank You for being with me at all times. Help me today to hear Your voice clearly and to obey. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
