FIRST LOVE – DAILY DEVOTIONAL – DAY 26

Prophetic Words – by James Brown – Anchor Worship Pastor

1 Corinthians 14:1-4 (NLT)
“Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy… one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them… one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.”

I find this bit of instruction to the Church in Corinth incredibly useful for the Church today.

Prophecy is the “gift of communicating and enforcing revealed truth” from the Greek word prophéteia (prof-ay-ti’-ah) προφητεία, ας, ἡ.

So Paul is admonishing the people of Corinth to communicate the revealed truth of God’s love in order to encourage and strengthen the people.

When we declare and communicate the revealed truth, it strengthens and encourages! This is prophesy.

In a way, this takes the mystery out of it, doesn’t it? I believe this is because it was never mean to be mysterious. Paul was making this very very plain here.

A prophetic word is communicating truth to someone in a way that encourages, strengthens and comforts. So this begs the question- Have you ever prophesied? Most likely, you have and didn’t even realize it.

THE POWER IN PROPHESY

When we speak truth on our own – that is to say without the Spirit’s power-, it carries a certain weight just in that it is truth. In fact, it is possible to attempt to communicate and enforce revealed truth with the wrong motive or wrong heart. Or even with the right heart, but without power. Often times, this does more harm than good.

However, something altogether different happens when we communicate and enforce truth as a specific gift of the Holy Spirit.

When we are filled with the Spirit as believers and begin to speak out truth, it lands in the hearts of those who hear in the way God meant for it to land. It connects at a level our mere words could not. It brings with it, power for the hearer. It’s super charged and life changing!

Perhaps its’ time for us to consistently put into practice the value of encouraging and strengthening one another by communicating the truth in the power of the Holy Spirit! I believe it will ultimately change the world.

PRAYER

Holy Spirit I thank you for your truth and I thank you for the opportunity you give us to encourage and strengthen one another. I welcome your Spirit to use me as a conduit of Your words to speak life into those around me. In your precious name, Jesus, Amen.
